Workshop Notice: Sacred Lands File

The Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC) will be hosting an in-person workshop to review the Sacred Lands File (SLF) and what should accompany a submission to the SLF.

Date: May 1, 2026
Time:
10am – 12pm
Location:
Soboba Casino Resort Events Center – Exla Room
22777 Soboba Road
San Jacinto, CA 92583

Commissioners and staff will review the current Sacred Lands File submission process and the following questions:

1. When submitting a site for inclusion in the Sacred Lands File Inventory, what information or back up should a tribe be required to provide to support that it is a sacred place?

2. Should an archaeologist be permitted to submit a site for inclusion in the Sacred Lands File Inventory? If so, under what parameters?

3. The Sacred Lands File Inventory contains sites submitted by individuals years ago that were not linked to a tribe and so when a search is conducted, all tribes in the area will be listed as those to be contacted. How should the NAHC review these individually submitted sites to determine the tribe(s) to which that site is connected?

4. The Commission is authorized to charge a fee for a search of the Sacred Lands File Inventory. Should tribes be exempt from this fee?

PUBLIC COMMENT – Public comment will be taken at the end of the workshop and is limited to 3 minutes for each speaker.
